Themed parties are the rage these days especially for special occasions like birthdays. They’re fun and most of all it brings out the creativity in each one of us. But apart from all the festive decors, fancy dishes and delectable treats, one of the things I look forward to would have to be dressing up. I love to go in theme but at the same time I don’t want to end up looking too costumey. So for today, I decided to create outfit ideas for an Alice in Wonderland themed party as inspired by some of the novel’s most notable characters.
“Curiouser and curiouser!”
Alice was often portrayed in a blue frock and doll shoes but I wanted to create a teenage version of her should she have been born in the modern era. I traded her blue dress for a mint-grey one and paired it with a blue denim jacket to keep the original hue still in play. Since she keeps running around Wonderland, I gave her a comfy pair of flats. A pair of sunnies can never hurt too and add in a unique diamond pouch where she can place some packets and vials that either make her teeny-tiny or gigantic, just for good measure.
“Why is a raven like a writing-desk?”
The Mad Hatter has got to be one of my favorite characters. I simply adore how he was portrayed in the novel as well as the movies and television shows that came after it. I originally wanted to go for psychedelic colors but when I saw these printed pants, I knew that I had to base an outfit on it. I paired it with a black knit top for added texture. A black hat with various prints was the perfect accessory alongside a matte black polish. The shoes I picked were these peep-toe wedge ankle boots to give the look more edge. To stay true to the Mad Hatter’s quirky sense of style, I finished it up with a shoulder bag resembling a can of Campbell’s soup.
“Off with their heads!”
The Queen of Hearts is one of those villains which everybody seems to be fascinated with. I remember during my sister’s Alice in Wonderland party, everyone’s favorite prop at the photobooth was the card that read “Off with their Heads!” and most of the guests loved to wear her crown. Blimey, we all wanted to be a mean royal that day! Kidding aside, I wanted an outfit that was powerful but also unique, posh but not too formal. So, I paired up a bright red dress with some black and white sneakers and a matching hat. To top it all off, I added a red polish for an extra pop of hue and a layered silver necklace.
“Oh my ears and whiskers, how late it's getting!”
The outfit inspiration for the White Rabbit was pretty easy to conjure but I didn’t want it to be stark white so I opted for a marble print tee and an asymmetrical skort. I also picked out a cracked white nail polish to match the shirt and some boots to help the White Rabbit run faster and not be late! Since I didn’t want a necklace or pendant for this look because the tee’s print was already bold, I opted for a clock patterned bag with a chain strap.
“Contrariwise…”
The twins were a fun concept to work with. If you actually have a twin, a sibling, a friend or even a significant other that you’d want to go matchy-matchy with then you can try dressing up as Tweedledum and Tweedledee. I wanted them to have a student-ish kind of vibe so I went with overalls and varsity print cropped tops. To differentiate them, I went with two different color palettes, varying overall lengths, feminine and boyish pairs of shoes as well as accessories.
So which among these outfits do you like most? What Alice in Wonderland character would you choose for inspiration? I would love to hear your ideas in the comments section below.
