Can you picture a world without creative minds? I can't because for me artistic ingenuity and imagination are a necessity. They're like the twinkling stars or the northern lights against our endless sky. They inspire and they evoke emotion at a certain level. My love for everything artsy-craftsy and literary has led me to discover people who does exactly that and I came to realize that it would be such a waste to keep them to myself. This is why I decided to showcase my favorite creatives and introduce them to my readers through a post series I'd like to call Spotlight. For my very first entry, let's focus the limelight on the artistique graphic designer and illustrator Mawee Borromeo and her love affair with pastels, crazy hair and voguish fashion flair.

Mawee has been graciously flooding my Instagram feed with her pastel themed illustrations. There is something about her art that speaks to me. They are refreshing, modest but eye catching. Together, let's get to know the artist behind the design!

Tell us a brief introduction about yourself and your craft.
Hi, I'm Mawee Borromeo! I'm a full-time graphic designer by day and a freelance illustrator at night. I took up Multimedia Arts and have been interested in anything art-related ever since I was little.

What inspires you to do what you do?
It always has been second nature for me to draw. My inspirations come from just about anything that fascinates me. It could be a TV show i'm watching at the moment, a fashion blogger with a quirky sense of style or just a random browse in Pinterest can spike up the drive for me to draw. What inspires me to keep going is the idea of knowing how far illustrating will take me.

Is there a particular project that you feel most proud of?
Hmm, I guess it would be all the illustrations that got published. I can't pick! Haha! I'm pretty proud of all of them!

Artists can sometimes get into a creative rut. How do you deal with one?
As much as possible, I try to get out of that negative bubble by trying new stuff out like reading a new book, discovering new blogs or websites to follow, going to places I've never been to, etc. just to inspire me. Another thing I do is this - I stalk my favorite local or international artists. It's a little tricky because it's either you get discouraged or motivated to get better but it's always good to be challenged and I think that's a good motivation to do something creative for yourself.

What is your dream project?
My dream project would be a collaboration with Kate Spade! I love the energy of their whole brand - from the choice of colors, concepts, etc. and it would be a dream come true if I get to work with them in the future.

OMG, I can't wait to see that Kate Spade collab come to life! By the way, Mawee accepts commissioned art so if you want to get yourself one of these masterpieces then go ahead and give her a ring.

Mawee has illustrated for big companies like Zalora, Dove, Meg Magazine, Goody and The Philippine Star. She was even named as one of the artists to watch out for by a local publication and I couldn't agree more. Can't get enough of Mawee and her art? I certainly need my dose of pastel fueled fashion illustrations so go ahead and stalk her blog and Instagram.
